Benevilla announced that Midwestern University is hosting the Opening Minds through Art program at Benevilla’s West Valley location in Surprise.

This groundbreaking, intergenerational art-making initiative, developed by the Scripps Gerontology Center at Miami University, aims to build a more inclusive society that values people of all ages,
including older adults living with dementia.

The OMA program, which began in 2007, pairs people living with dementia with volunteers, including students from Midwestern University, to create art together. By focusing on imagination rather than memory and leveraging existing strengths, OMA transforms participants into artists and teachers, fostering genuine connections and leaving behind a legacy of artwork.

“We are excited to bring OMA to Benevilla and provide our members with a unique opportunity to engage in creative expression,” said Lindsey Nichols, program director at Benevilla’s West Valley location. “The program’s focus on building friendships through art helps bridge the gap between generations and combat age segregation, promoting a more compassionate and connected community.”

The program not only benefits the artists but also enriches the lives of volunteers and participants by cultivating a shared appreciation for art and each other’s stories. Through regular, direct interactions centered around creativity, OMA fosters positive attitudes and mutual respect across generations.

Benevilla is proud to host such an impactful initiative and looks forward to seeing the wonderful outcomes that will emerge from this collaboration and expresses heartfelt gratitude to Midwestern University for their support.
