Man charged with murder in September Surprise shooting

Posted

A man is facing murder charges for a Surprise shooting in September.

Police have charged Roger Diaz, 23, with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Isaiah Rivera on Sept. 19.

Rivera died from his injuries more than a week later, leading to elevated charges against Diaz.

The suspect is also facing four other charges.

Police said before midnight on Sept. 19, they responded to calls of a shooting at a home near Greenway Road and Grand Avenue.

Rivera, who was 35, was transported to a hospital after officers found him with a shooting wound.

Diaz was arrested four days later with the assistance of Surprise police crime analysts and the U.S. Marshall’s Service.

Diaz was initially charged with aggravated assault causing physical injury, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, discharging firearm in city limits and disorderly conduct with a deadly weapon.

Ater Rivera's death, Surprise police worked with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office to amend Diaz’s criminal charges.

Investigators said Diaz and Rivera knew each other but didn't say what led up to the shooting.

Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to contact the Surprise Police Department at 623-222-4000, 623-222-TIPS (8477), or email crimetips@surpriseaz.gov.
