The Caring Angels volunteer organization, which meets 9 a.m.-noon Mondays and Tuesday at Sun City Christian Church, 9745 W. Palmeras Drive, recently received a variety of donations.
John Staggs, a member of the West Valley National Society Sons of the American Revolution Saguaro Chapter, received 600 flattened plastic bags ready for cutting into strips and rolling strips into plarn balls, which are then crocheted into sleeping mats for homeless veterans.
Sun City NSDAR Agua Fria Chapter Daughter Mary Kay Campbell collected and flattened the plastic bags, which came from family and friends. The Saguaro SAR Chapter donated seven gift cards, which are being held by the Caring Angels leader Jody Swank. The gift cards will be included with other donated items to be placed in backpacks. The backpacks are given with the plastic crocheted sleeping mats to the non-profit Veterans First organization. They will distribute the backpacks to homeless veterans in the Phoenix, Tucson and Prescott areas.
Members from the Agua Fria DAR chapters will join the Caring Angels Oct. 11 for a National Daughters of the American Revolution Day of Service by helping with preparing the plastic bags for crocheting.
Those interested in joining Caring Angels can email yarning8@cox.net for more information. Volunteers are always welcome.
