Calligraphy Society slates open house in Sun City

Posted

The Sun City Calligraphy Society will host an open house 1-3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, in the Sundial Center club room. All RCSC members are welcome to attend and learn about the classes being offered this fall.

Classes include: Introduction to Calligraphy, which offers student an overview of several calligraphy styles that demonstrate the art of calligraphy, teaching students about the various tools, pen strokes used, types of paper and some of the various calligraphy styles; Simplified Calligraphy offers the opportunity to learn an easy style of calligraphy to allow students to start utilizing what they have learned; and Modern Brush Calligraphy teaches a slightly more advanced type of calligraphy, which demonstrates the up and down strokes utilized in many styles of calligraphy.

Other styles of calligraphy are taught as requested including Flourishing and Fun with Calligraphy. Calligraphy is not about penmanship. It is a form of art, utilizing individual pen strokes that lead to distinctive greeting cards, poem writing, sign lettering and other uses for beautiful writing.

Card making and other craft making classes allow club members to learn new ideas and techniques. Zentangle classes, taught by a certified Zentangle, combines art and calligraphy.

The club is not only about learning calligraphy, but also about giving back to the community. Members make “Love Cards” for the residents in area retirement centers. The club supplies card making tools and materials allowing members to use their creativity, while helping the community. The club accepts donations of used cards to repurpose into these Love Cards. Membership in the club is restricted to RCSC card holders only.

Workshops, where members create, and assist each other, are scheduled for 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. Mondays and 9-11 a.m. Thursdays and Fridays. Calligraphy creations are for sale any time during the workshops.
