A 33-year-old man has been indicted for second-degree murder and other charges after he drove away from a domestic violence incident in Phoenix and struck a bicyclist before crashing his vehicle in Tempe, authorities said Tuesday.
Jamarr Dwayne Young is in custody and being held on a cash-only $500,000 bond. His trial is set for Oct. 1, according to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.
At about 8 p.m. May 16, Phoenix police officers responded to a home near 6200 South 16th Street regarding a domestic violence call.
They found Young, “who was immediately aggressive towards officers,” according to a Phoenix Police Department release.
Police said Young refused to obey commands given by the officers and got into his vehicle, which was parked in the front of the home.
“Young quickly drove his car towards multiple officers and hit a fully marked police Tahoe in order to make an avenue of escape,” police stated in the release.
The suspect drove away northbound on 16th Street from the home and away from officers, police said.
As Young was traveling northbound on 16th Street, he struck a man who was crossing 16th Street on a bicycle and continued northbound on 16th Street.
The bicyclist died at the scene.
Officers found the suspect’s vehicle and attempted to stop it, but he refused to stop, and a pursuit began.
“Officers continued this pursuit until Young’s driving became so erratic that the pursuit was called off,” police stated in the release.
Young eventually collided into fencing at a construction area in Tempe, near the Interstate 10 and US 60 interchange, police said, adding he attempted to run away but was caught by officers.
Young assaulted officers before he was placed into handcuffs, according to the release.
He was indicted on the following:
One count of second-degree murder.
One count of leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
One count of unlawful flight from law enforcement.
Two counts of aggravated assault.
One count of resisting arrest.
One count of domestic violence assault.
