Tempe Community Council celebrates Don Carlos Humanitarian Awards Nov. 18

Posted

Sharon Doyle, a dedicated community leader and service advocate, has been named the 41st recipient of the Don Carlos Humanitarian Award by Tempe Community Council.

Doyle will be celebrated at the 2024 Don Carlos Humanitarian Awards ceremony, sponsored by Salt River Project, which will be held Monday, Nov. 18 at 5:30 p.m. at the SRP PERA Club, according to a city release.

The awards ceremony will bring together community members, civic leaders and honorees to celebrate the contributions of this year’s award recipients.

Don Carlos Humanitarian Awards honor individuals who have shown dedication to improving the lives of others and embody the spirit of compassion and service within the Tempe community, the release explained.

Named after Tempe’s founder Charles Trumbull Hayden, known by Hispanic pioneers as “Don Carlos,” Hayden devoted his life to helping those in need, and the Don Carlos Humanitarian Award reflects his legacy.

Recipients of this award are true humanitarians who have significantly contributed to making Tempe a better place for everyone, the release stated.

Throughout her life, Doyle has demonstrated a legacy of dedication to human services through her work with TCC, including the Tempe Coalition, Tempe Impacts Education  Foundation, the Kiwanis Club of Tempe and Tempe Sister Cities.

She has volunteered for years across multiple humanitarian efforts, including youth programs, substance abuse prevention, public education and sustaining community vitality, the release noted.

"Sharon Doyle, along with our other awardees, exemplifies the difference one person can make. We look forward to celebrating their work and contributions with you," Nicole Spracale, TCC board chair, said in the release.

TCC will also recognize the 2024 Young Humanitarian Award recipient Joselyn Hernandez Rodriguez, a Tempe High School graduate who has been actively involved in Key Club, English Language Learners Club, Peer Tutoring and the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, dedicating volunteer time to improve her community.

The release stated that along with the award, Hernandez will receive a $2,000 scholarship provided by the Ramsey Social Justice Foundation at the event.

“TCC is honored to host a night of celebration focused on selfless acts and raising funds for our programs. Don Carlos awardees demonstrate TCC’s mission and purpose to provide connection and fill service gaps,” said Executive Director Octavia Harris in the release.
