The Maricopa County Elections Department is expected to post the Surprise primary election results approximately after 8 p.m. at results.maricopa.vote.
Voting appeared to be light early on in Surprise as the Surprise City Hall voting center, one of eight in the city, had no lines throughout the morning.
Surprise residents are voting on candidates for mayor and the City Council in Districts 2, 3 and 4 for four-year terms expiring December 2028. The Districts 2, 3 and 4 races are uncontested.
To win the mayoral election, Aly Cline, Kevin Sartor or write-in Ed Cunningham must receive more than 50% of the votes. Otherwise, a runoff will be held between the top two candidates at the November general election.
Voters are also decided whether to ratify the Surprise 2040 general plan.
If voters approve the plan, the city will use it to help guide future decisions regarding land development, public safety, parks and recreation, economic development, environmental concerns and social issues.
Arizona State Law requires every city and county in Arizona to update or readopt a general plan every 10 years by a public vote.
The Maricopa County Elections Department will post unofficial results daily until all ballots have been tabulated. Results are not official until they are canvassed.
Not less than six days nor more than 20 days after a primary or general election, the governing body of the city or town will meet to canvass the votes.
A final ballot tally is expected by Aug. 12, if not sooner, from the Maricopa County Elections Department.
The Surprise City Council will meet to canvass soon after the final results are received from Maricopa County.
Surprise will have several locations available for voting today for the primary election. There are also several drop-off locations as well.
The Surprise voting and dropoff locations are at the following places:
