ADOT to begin Loop 303 interchange work in Surprise

One night closure expected for project that will take months

Posted

The Arizona Department of Transportation will begin work Monday, July 29 on interim U.S. 60/Loop 303 interchange improvements.

This will result in the following closure to allow crews to set up barriers for the upcoming improvements:

The northbound Loop 303 off-ramp at U.S. 60/Grand Avenue will be closed from 10 p.m. July 29 to 4 a.m. Tuesday, July 30.

Northbound Loop 303 also will be narrowed to two lanes starting one mile south of U.S. 60/Grand Avenue up to the off-ramp during this time.

For a detour, northbound Loop 303 drivers may exit at Bell Road and use Reems Road to connect with U.S. 60/Grand Avenue.

Following this overnight closure, the northbound Loop 303 off-ramp will be narrowed to one lane. Drivers are encouraged to allow extra time when using this off-ramp for the next few weeks.

This work is part of a $4.6 million improvement project that is expected to take six months to complete and is intended to improve traffic flow in this growing part of the West Valley.

The project will include:

  • Adding a second lane to the northbound Loop 303 off-ramp at U.S. 60.
  • Widening the Loop 303/U.S. 60 intersection to provide two dedicated left turn lanes, one optional right or left turn lane and one dedicated right turn lane from the northbound Loop 303 off-ramp to U.S. 60.
  • Adding a third left turn lane from southbound 163rd Avenue to eastbound U.S. 60.
  • Extending the existing eastbound U.S. 60 third lane from just west of Loop 303 to 163rd Avenue.
  • Sidewalk/ramp modifications for ADA compliance.

There are future plans for more extensive improvements to reconstruct the Loop 303 and U.S. 60 system interchange. These improvements are identified in the Regional Transportation Investment Plan for Maricopa County. Funding for projects in the plan will be considered by voters this November as part of Proposition 479.
