Sun City West residents invited to dementia friendly dining

Residents in Sun City West are invited to take part in Dementia Friendly events in Surprise.
Home Instead Surprise Co-Owner and Operator Debbie Gross said dementia friendly dining is new to the area.
The next event is from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 16, at the Saigon Kitchen, 14071 W. Bell Road.
"We are giving it a try as we have seen other states and communities partner with restaurants to offer dementia friendly dining times with great success.," stated Gross.
Dementia friends officials will be training the staff at Saigon Kitchen on how to be dementia friendly. A dementia friendly dining experience includes things such as friendly and trained staff. Staff who understands dementia, its symptoms and effective communication techniques. Staff will be patient, use a calm tone, and engage in gentle conversation with patrons and allow extra time for ordering and eating.
There will be comfortable seating arrangements and the sensory environment will be controlled with calm warm colors, adequate lighting and minimized background noise.
Menus will be simplified and written in large print, using pictures and symbols and daily specials.
Another upcoming event includes the five-year anniversary celebration of the Memory Cafe 10-11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, at the Surprise Memory Cafe, 17420 N. Avenue of the Arts.
