Sun City West Cycling Club enjoys European summer adventure

Posted

In August, 20 members of the Sun City West Cycling Club met in France to embark on a seven nights and eight days bike and barge tour on the Moselle River. The club pedaled between 22-33 miles daily along the Moselle, crossing Luxembourg and German borders multiple times. The trip melded the wonderful sport of cycling while transporting through a time travel of historical eras and events. Members stops included Roman architectures and baths, a WWII bunker in the middle of a farm field, the Schengen Agreement Area that opened border crossings, modern-day wine productions and taste testing, medieval castles and ruins and quaint, centuries’ old villages.

The tour’s landscape was a photographer’s paradise. The 32-passenger barge was an intimate setting fostering camaraderie and meeting cyclists from all over the world. Engaging with the seven-member international crew was unique.

“It was a great way to see the most on a short visit. Biking was great to see many small towns to experience culture, history, and friendly local people,” stated Scott Swanson, Sun City West Cycling Club member.

Club member Kath Culliton said both the bike rid and barge tour captured the charm and natural beauty of the Moselle River.
