Plona: Will Flake, other Republican endorsements of Harris make a difference in November?

Posted

Before there was a Liz Cheney and an Adam Kinzinger (two Republicans who voted to impeach former President Trump, there was a Jeff Flake.

Jeff Flake served the people of Arizona in both the House and the Senate for 18 years from 2001 to 2019. He was a true conservative in the Barry Goldwater tradition and in fact was the executive director of the Goldwater Institute before being elected to Congress.

Flake, early in Trump’s presidency, was one of the first senators to speak out against Trump, using both his Twitter account and the Senate floor to criticize the former president. Everything he said in 2017 is  relevant today:  “the threats to our democracy from within and without are real.” And, “it is time for our complicity and our accommodation of the unacceptable to end.” He also added, “Politics can make us silent when we should speak, and silence can equal complicity.”

This past weekend Jeff Flake, very conservative, past Republican  U.S. Senator from Arizona,  and recent Ambassador to Turkey, endorsed Kamala Harris to be the next President of the United States.  He said he was endorsing her, not only because of her grasp of foreign policy, but also her proposal for tougher border restrictions.

More Republicans have crossed over to endorse Harris.  It remains to be seen if their endorsements will make a difference on Tuesday, Nov 5.
