New quilt on display at Sun City West library

“Ripples,” designed, pieced and quilted by Lorna Dawson, is on display through October at the R.H. Johnson Library.

“Ripples” started as an idea Dawson had to create an abstract of the sunsets over the water in Puget Sound. The blocks were created first with strips whose colors reflected the water and setting sun. Strips were sewn together to create panels of color so she could then fussy cut squares for the angles she desired. Using free motion quilting, Dawson created wave movement and cloud-like lines.

Dawson began quilting 27 years ago but her sewing expertise before that was creating lined garments for work. She progressed to quilts at the insistence of her twin, Jodi Davila.

Dawson’s first quilt was a “color disaster” using bright orange and Kelly green. But she tried again and learned the hard way what “scant quarter inch” meant in the quilting world. After recutting and resewing, and with her sister’s encouragement, Dawson’s next quilt fared a little better.

“Ripples” won the adult intermediate Best of Show in the 2006 National Arts Program in Tacoma, WA.

The club room is open 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday (until 8 p.m. Tuesday) and 8 a.m.-noon Saturday at the Kuentz Center. Visitors are welcome.
