New quilt on display at Sun City West library

“Stars in Stripes,” machine pieced and quilted by Liz Baker.
Posted
“Stars in Stripes” is the July quilt at the R.H. Johnson Library, 13801 W. Meeker Blvd. It was machine pieced and quilted by Liz Baker.
Baker said the pattern for “Stars in Stripes” “caught (her) eye. It was shown in red, white and blue, so it was a no brainer for an honor quilt.”
The Palo Verde Patchers quilt club in Sun City West sponsors an Honor Quilt program, which is an integral part of PVP’s “Quilts for Causes” program. Members create patriotic quilts throughout the year and present them to local veterans who have served in a combat zone. Baker is one of those dedicated members.
“I really like helping friends and other quilt buddies with projects,” she said. “Maybe this is because I once worked in a fabric store. I enjoy giving my input on their projects.”
“Stars in Stripes” is a pieced star block designed by Linda Krombeen and Sandy DeCarlo. Baker said the assembly of the top “was a breeze,” only taking a day.
She has been quilting for about 20 years and has been a member of quilt guilds in Washington as well as PVP in Arizona. Cathi Harrington did the final quilting and Carla Bonifasi attached the label and the binding.
Individuals may nominate a local, combat zone veteran for a quilt by contacting PVP or filling out a nomination form. Visit patchers.scwclubs.com for more information.
The club room is open at the Kuentz center 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday (8 p.m. on Tuesday) and 8 a.m.-noon Saturday. Visitors are welcome.
