Second suspect in fatal north Phoenix shooting calls police, plays victim

A second man is in custody in connection to a home invasion that ended in the deaths of a homeowner and two dogs.

Phoenix police report Michael Francis Warner, 47, was arrested Monday afternoon near 7th Street and Thunderbird Road.

Records released Tuesday indicate Mr. Warner had planned and completed an armed robbery with Matthew Ryan Zawacky and other suspects on Jan. 8. Over the course of the incident, 50-year-old Travis Dunham was shot and killed. Mr. Zawacky also sustained a gunshot wound and was later arrested at the Mexico border.

Mr. Warner had contacted police himself and stated he was a victim, records state.

However, police learned of Mr. Warner's alleged involvement after Mr. Zawacky told several people of his actions and saying Mr. Warner had planned the robbery.

Detectives learned the two suspects had a well-established relationship. About two months ago, Mr. Warner reportedly tried to recruit people to conduct an armed robbery against Mr. Dunham.

Mr. Warner was booked into jail in lieu of a $1 million bond. He faces charges of first-degree murder, armed robbery, aggravated assault, kidnapping and burglary.
