Boy facing heat-related issues dies after South Mountain hike rescue

A 10-year-old boy died Tuesday after suffering “heat-related emergencies” while hiking with his family on South Mountain, Phoenix police said.

Detectives are investigating the death, which occurred after officers were called just before 3 p.m. July 2 to the South Mountain Park and Preserve to assist an injured hiker.

The boy was airlifted to an ambulance and taken to a hospital in critical condition. He died later from problems caused by the heat, police stated in a release.
