Scottsdale residents return to homes after Diamond Fire burns 1,960 acres

An evacuation order was lifted Wednesday night for hundreds of Scottsdale residents who were forced to leave their homes at the peak of the Diamond Fire.

Firefighters made progress throughout the day, and the fire was considered 30% percent contained and covered 1,960 acres. That figure was below the 3,000 acres shown in earlier mapping of the blaze, according to the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management.

The fire was caused by humans, though authorities did not provide details as of Wednesday night when the evacuation order was lifted at about 7.

Law enforcement increased patrols within the fire area, and firefighters patrolled neighborhood throughout Wednesday night.

The Diamond Fire started Tuesday afternoon near 130th and Ranch Gate Road in North Scottsdale, approximately 11 miles southwest of the community of Rio Verde, forestry department officials said.

It burned through grass and brush just northwest of the McDowell Mountains, forcing the evacuation of more than 100 home and 1,145 residents.

“The wind-driven fire moved quickly throughout Tuesday afternoon and evening,” officials said in a statement, and air tankers where called upon to slow its movement.

McDowell Mountain Regional Park remained closed, officials said Wednesday night.

Some trails within the Scottsdale trail system in the McDowells are also closed.
