Gilbert police make arrests in weekend homicides

The Gilbert Police Department has announced arrests in two fatal incidents that happened within just over an hour of each other early in the morning of Sunday, June 18.

Police also have identified the two victims since initial reports from the unrelated incidents.

Police arrested 36-year-old Dennis Fernando Pacheco on Tuesday, June 20, in connection with his alleged involvement in the stabbing of 22-year-old Isaiah Panez.

Gilbert police officers had responded at approximately 1:16 a.m. June 18 to the parking lot on the southwest corner of North Ash Street and West Vaughn Avenue, where Panez was found with multiple stab wounds after an alleged altercation with Pacheco. Panez was transported to the hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

Pacheco was booked into the custody of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office on one count of second-degree murder.

Pacheco’s arrest comes a day after Gilbert police officers arrested a suspect Monday evening in the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Jacob Carlson that occurred at approximately 12:06 a.m. Sunday, June 18.

However, as the suspect is juvenile, police declined to release his name.

Gilbert Police Officers had responded to the 100 block of West Moore Avenue in relation to a shooting call, where Carlson was found shot in the chest and upper torso after an altercation in a back yard at a small house party.  Carlson was transported to the hospital where he later died of his injuries.

The teen was booked as a juvenile at Durango Juvenile Detention Facility on suspicion of second-degree murder, two counts of misconduct involving weapons, unlawful dischargement of firearms, three counts of endangerment, aggravated assault and first-degree burglary.
