Independent Newsmedia
A Phoenix man was shot and killed during an argument July 4 that turned violent.
The 51-year-old man was shot and killed in the area near Central and Minnezona avenues about 8:45 p.m. Thursday night during what officials said was a First Amendment demonstration.
Police initially responded to a call about a verbal altercation between several people that was turning violent. When officers arrived, the discovered one man who had been shot and another who had been stabbed. The man who had been stabbed was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Officers detained a woman at the scene who was believed to be involved in the shooting. After being transported for questioning, the woman said the shooting occurred in self defense during a First Amendment demonstration, police said.
After viewing survelience tapes and consulting with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, the woman was released, police said.
Detectives continue to investigate the incident and a charging decision will be made after the investigation is complete, police said.
