Phoenix police detectives are investigating to determine if impairment was a factor in a Friday night crash that left one woman dead and sent five people to hospitals.

The crash occurred about 8:35 p.m. July 5 near 5400 East Pinnacle Peak Road and involved two vehicles that were on fire when officers arrived. Firefighters had arrived and were putting out the blaze, according to a release from the Phoenix Police Department.

Six occupants were treated and sent to hospitals. One of the victims, 53-year-old Juliene Aumani, died a short time after arriving at a hospital.

Preliminary information suggests that a Fiat operated by 19-year-old woman was traveling west on Pinnacle Peak Road when it left the roadway hitting some bushes and palo verde trees on the north side easement, the release stated.

The vehicle went back into the roadway and crossed the centerline where it struck a Toyota Corolla that was being driven by a 31-year-old woman and occupied by four adult passengers, including Aumani.

All of the others involved are expected to survive, authorities said.

An investigation is continuing as detectives seek to determine if impairment was involved in the crash.
