Gilbert Fire hosts back-to-school shopping event for students

Nearly 60 students from Gilbert Public Schools returned to class with new clothes and shoes thanks to the Gilbert Fire & Rescue Department, Kohl’s and community partners.

GFRD held its annual Back to School shopping event Aug. 17.

Students were paired with fire and police personnel, town staff and volunteers to do their back-to-school shopping for the 2024-25 school year.

Each child was given a $200 gift card from Kohl’s to buy new clothes and shoes. All students were preselected by the school district.

Gilbert Fire & Rescue has hosted this event for two decades, helping nearly 1,100 kids over the years.

The event is made possible with donations from community partners. The department gave special thanks this year to American Legion Post 39, Bands 4 Backpacks, East Valley Firefighter Charities, and Kohl’s.

Guests on-hand to support the students at the event were Gilbert Mayor Brigette Peterson, Fire Chief Rob Duggan, Police Chief Michael Soelberg, and Gilbert Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Shane McCord.
