Latino identity is focus of Chandler-Gilbert college forum

Chandler Gilbert-Community College, in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, presents a Thursday, Sept. 26 forum led by guest speaker Dr. Irasema Coronado.

“Beyond Labels: Unpacking the Complexity of Latino Identities” is the focus for the 1 p.m. open forum, to be held at the CGCC Pecos Campus Student Center, Room 140), 2626 E. Pecos Road in Chandler.

Coronado will lead an engaging conversation and open forum.  She'll discuss how the nation’s second-largest ethnic group in the country is far from monolithic and rather rich in cultural, historical, racial, dialectical, religious, and socioeconomic contrasts, in addition to varying degrees of “connectedness” to Latin America.

Coronado is a professor and the principal of the School of Transborder Studies at Arizona State University. She's also the chair of ASU's Advisory Committee on Hispanic-Serving Institutions.

The forum is sponsored by the CGCC Title V Project and Student Life.

There is also a virtual attendance opportunity: The Webex ID is 24841047154 and the password is JBmP62htmf9.

CGCC invites the public to attend this forum. There are other CGCC Hispanic Heritage Events in September and early October.  Look for more events at cgc.edu.

We invite our readers to submit their civil comments on this topic.  Email AZOpinions@iniusa.org.
