The Galveston neighborhood of Chandler recently earned a national distinction.
The neighborhood is one of five finalists in the 2024 Neighborhoods USA social revitalization and beautification category.
Area leaders and residents were recognized at a Chandler City Council meeting in September by Mayor Kevin Hartke, Vice Mayor O.D. Harris and city staff.
First place in the category went to the Lake Como (Texas) Neighborhood Association’s Juneteenth celebration. Three Southern California association efforts took second and third place and the other finalist honor.
Priscilla Quintana, a Chandler native and the city’s neighborhood preservation programs manager, introduced the group, led by Galveston Elementary School Principal Tony Alcala and others who are the face of Galveston revitalization.
Quintana said collaboration efforts in the neighborhood have fostered a more unified and empowered community, and that’s led to more ongoing beautification and construction projects.
“Previously struggling with crime and deterioration, the neighborhood has transformed,” Quintana said. “Residents, city staff and local stakeholders have worked together to restore pride, safety and cleanliness.”
