​A church in South Chandler recently marked an important milestone in its independence.

Pastor Candace Lansberry led an April 27 Chandler United Methodist Church ceremony where CUMC’s mortgage was burned.

The ceremony represented CUMC paying off the mortgage for the land where its church is located, on the north side of Chandler Heights Road, east of Arizona Avenue.

“We proudly celebrated the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and financial prudence as we conducted a mortgage burning ceremony and dedication of the church building,” the church said in a news release. “This ceremony represents the momentous occasion of paying off our mortgage in full, symbolizing financial freedom, stability, and success. It is a testament to our unwavering commitment to fiscal responsibility and strategic planning."

The church says it has diligently worked toward this goal since moving out of the last of several Downtown Chandler locations years ago.

“Over the years, we have navigated through economic challenges and uncertainties with resilience and perseverance,” the news release states. “Through prudent financial management and the dedication of our members, we have successfully paid off our mortgage, positioning our church to a solid foundation for future growth and prosperity."

The sermon was delivered by Rev. Melissa Rynders, Central East District Superintendent. Members shared their stories of the move from Downtown Chandler and their dreams for ministry at the new location.

The celebration ended in a shared meal.

CUMC said a video of congratulations was sent to the church by Bishop Carlo Rapunut of the Phoenix area.
