There is still time for children in sixth, seventh and eighth grades to sign up for a summer adventure at the Apache Junction Police Department Youth Academy.

Planned are: SWAT demo, K9 demo, CSI training, traffic accident investigation, defensive tactics, apprehensions, tour of PD and courts and more.

Children will not shoot real firearms but may handle inoperable demonstration weapons, according to the city’s website.

It will be held in two sessions Monday-Friday July 8-12; Session A from 8 .m. to 12:20 p.m.; and Session B from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

“The AJPD Youth Academy offers two session times this year — even more opportunities for young participants to engage with officers and learn about law enforcement firsthand,” according to a post on Facebook @AJUSD43.

“(T)he Youth Academy creates positive relationships between youth and the Police Department. Participants will get an inside look at the daily operations of the AJPD, all while having fun and making new friends. Plus, it’s completely free and lunch is provided each day,” it states.

Drop-off/arrival time is between 7:50 a.m. and 8 a.m. for Session A and between 12:20 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. for Session B each day. Tardiness is discouraged, it states.

Pick up/departure time is 12:30 p.m. for Session A and 5 p.m. for Session B. You will be required to show picture identification when picking up your child, it states.
