A Glendale police K9 continues to recover after he was struck by gunfire during an encounter with an escaped inmate.

On July 31, the U. S. Marshals Violent Offender Task Force was searching for Skyler Martin, who had walked away from a supervised, off-site Arizona Department of Corrections work crew in February.

Officers with from the task force located Mr. Martin at a residence near 2700 E. Baseline Road in Phoenix.

At that time, Glendale police K9 Officer Wes Zygmont and K9 Mick were involved in a shooting with the suspect.

Mick was struck during the exchange of gunfire. He was taken to a local animal hospital where he was treated and underwent surgery for two separate gunshot wounds.

Police said Mick should recover from his injuries.
