Tempe police provide details about officer-involved shooting

A car theft late Sunday night escalated when the driver smashed the stolen Kia into Tempe police vehicles and ended when she was shot, authorities said Tuesday.

At a news conference, Tempe police described the incident, which took place at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, as a “dynamic, rapidly evolving, fluid event in which the (33-year-old driver) made it clear she was going to make every attempt to evade arrest, disregarding the safety of the officers and the community.”

Police said they responded Sunday night to a report of a stolen car, which had been taken from Phoenix, that was found in the 1300 block of West Baseline Road.

Tempe officers conducted a traffic stop on the driver of the car in a parking lot.

The driver fled, leaving two passengers in the car.

Police said a 33-year-old woman, Kristina Duranceau, who was one of two passengers in the car, cooperated with officers initially but then went behind the steering wheel and began ramming the Kia into police vehicles.

Police said officers fired “less-lethal” rounds, but the driver continued to ram police vehicles and hit another car and a wall.

As the Kia headed toward one of the officers, the officer fired at the car.

Police were able to get the driver out of the car, and she was given first aid at the scene before being taken to a hospital with gunshot wounds, officials said, adding she is expected to survive.

No officers were injured, nor was the other passenger.

A sergeant and officer have been placed on administrative leave while the case is being investigated.

The man who fled has not been found, but police said they have an investigative lead.

When Duranceau is discharged from the hospital, she will be placed under arrest and charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault, endangerment and possession of dangerous drugs, according to police.

Officials also noted that Duranceau was involved in a similar incident earlier this month that included ramming Gilbert police vehicles.
