See where Tempe high schools ranked on U.S. News and World Report’s list

Nine Tempe high schools made U.S. News and World Report’s 2024 list of best public high schools in Arizona.

U.S. News records data on almost 25,000 public high schools across the country, including traditional, charter and magnet schools. Its rankings also include science, technology, engineering and math-focused schools. Nearly 17,660 schools were ranked on six factors based on their performance on state assessments and how well they prepare students for college.

U.S. News ranks high schools “to give an unbiased look at how well schools serve their students” and help parents make informed decisions about their child’s education.

Tempe high schools that made its 2024 list are:

Tempe Preparatory Academy

  • #46 in Arizona Rankings
  • #3,090 in National Rankings

New School for the Arts

  • #10,443 in National Rankings

Marcos De Niza High School

Tempe High School

  • #234 in Arizona Rankings
  • #12,952 in National Rankings

Tapbi

  • #239-360 in Arizona Rankings
  • #13,242-17,655 in National Rankings

Tempe high schools unranked but listed in the report included Compadre High School, Humanities and Sciences Academy Arizona, International Commerce High School, Ombudsman - Charter Northeast and Pinnacle Charter High School.

The overall scores are based on the following six criteria: college readiness, state assessment proficiency, state assessment performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth and graduation rate.

Using this methodology, schools earned an overall percentile score between 0 and 100 at two decimal places, according to the report. Scores below the 25th percentile are listed with a ranking range rather than a numerical rank, and each percentile includes 177 schools, so small changes due to any factor can result in big moves within the rankings, the report said.
