ASU student dies after fall at Yosemite’s Half Dome

Posted

An Arizona State University student died July 13 after slipping and falling from the Half Dome cables at Yosemite National Park while hiking with her father.

Grace Rohloff, 20, was hiking with her father when the accident happened. Talking to NBC News, Rohloff’s father, Jonathan, said  after reaching the summit of one of Yosemite’s most challenging hikes, they were descending the Half Dome cables when his daughter slipped during a sudden thunderstorm, falling down the mountain.

Despite being experienced hikers, the inclement weather made the rocks slippery, and Rohloff’s father expressed to NBC News the conditions were “an accident waiting to happen” and that the park’s cable system is “unnecessarily dangerous.”

Yosemite National Park officials have not responded to requests for comment on this incident from media outlets and have yet to issue a statement regarding Rohloff’s death.

Grace Rohloff was her class salutatorian at Valley Lutheran High School and had just completed her second year at ASU. She was planning to receive her bachelor’s degree in two and half years and was expected to student-teach at her alma mater.
