Surprise curbside recycling officially returns
Blue bins will be sorted again starting this week
Independent Newsmedia/Jason Stone
Surprise officials will be educating residents on what to put in the blue recycling bins as the city relaunches curbside recycling service this week. Trash in plastic bags and used food boxes are considered contaminants in a recycling pile.

The city of Surprise, in partnership with Waste Management, will officially begin the curbside recycling program on March 4.
Recycling trucks have been picking up customers' blue curbside recycle bins for the past several months as part of our pre-launch period.
However, starting Monday, they will begin taking approved items to a recycling center for processing.
How to be prepared for your designated pick-up day collection:
Trash and recycle bins must be curbside by 6 a.m.
Place bins in the street against the curb, with the handle side closest to your home.
Ensure both containers are at least four feet away from each other and from nearby fences, light posts, mailboxes or other obstacles.
Keep all vehicles a minimum of 15 feet away from the bins.
Ensure no trash or contaminated items are in your blue recycle bin.
Do not bag any of your recyclables.
Recycling Rules:
Items allowed in the recycle bins are paper (no shredded paper), approved plastics represented by the number 1 or 2 inside the recycling symbol, cardboard, aluminum or tin cans and glass bottles.
All recyclable items should be lightly rinsed, if necessary, and completely dry before going into the curbside recycling bin.
The city’s Public Works team will regularly check recycling bins for unacceptable materials.
Homes that are not recycling properly will have educational tags placed on their containers.
If residents repeatedly place unacceptable items in their bins, they will receive a violation notice from inspectors.
As of March 4, the drop-off recycling program will no longer be available as curbside recycling will be the best way for city-serviced customers to recycle their items.
Customers can easily find their designated pick-up day on the MySurprise App. The app is available in both the Apple and Android app stores or at surpriseaz.gov/mysurprise.
Using the app, click “Trash Reminders” to find your pickup day and sign up to receive weekly reminders about your pickup schedule, including changes caused by holiday weeks.
Customers can find information on the city's curbside recycling program and tips on how to “Recycle Wise” at surpriseaz.gov/Recycle.
