With the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 and its impacts to public assembly and the city’s Fiscal Year 2020 budget and beyond, all Surprise recreation programming and events will continue to be suspended until further notice.

This includes summer camps, youth and adult sports leagues and camps, swim lessons, swim teams, open swim and large gatherings such as the 4th of July fireworks celebration.

All recreation centers, the parks and recreation office, tennis complex and aquatics facilities remain closed to the public until further notice.

Surprise parks, walking paths and open space remain open to the public; and fishing is allowed at the Surprise Community Park Lake, 15930 N. Bullard Ave. Physical distancing guidelines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control apply in these areas.

Some playground amenities remain closed until further notice: playground equipment, splash pads, restrooms, pickle ball and basketball courts, skate park and dog parks.

The city’s libraries, operated by Maricopa County Library District, also remain closed. The District offers online eMedia options, as well as a new curbside pickup program at Northwest Regional Library, 16089 N. Bullard Ave., Surprise. Visit https://mcldaz.org.

“We have the very best Parks & Rec staff and award-winning recreation programs and facilities in Surprise; and the decision to extend certain program and service closures was not made lightly,” city manager Michael Frazier stated in a news release. “We have to prepare for any revenue reductions that are headed our way in order to end the fiscal year (June 30, 2020) with a balanced budget as required by state statute.”

The city’s budget strategy will allow, if additional cost-cutting is needed, to identify future service reductions. It is also built with flexibility in place to re-open some amenities, if the negative impacts to the budget are less than anticipated and public health guidelines allow.

The city will not receive tax data for the months March–June for several months, as reported by the state. These are the months the city expects to see some of the greatest financial impacts from COVID-19 business closures and event cancelations.
