New cadet program coming to Surprise Fire Department

Posted

The Surprise Fire-Medical Department is accepting applications for those interested in joining its new fire cadet program, launching in late 2024.

The fire cadet program is a volunteer opportunity for those at least 18 years of age who want to pursue a career in the fire service. This program offers a resume-building experience intended to help build good character, teach the responsibilities of active citizenship and develop mental acuity and physical fitness, officials said.

The program requires a minimum commitment of 16 hours per month. This includes attending mandatory quarterly meetings for all members. These meetings are anticipated to be held 5-8 p.m. on the first Monday of January, April, July and October.

Cadets will also take part in other activities, including attending trainings, riding along with SFMD crews and participating in community service events.

Program qualifications include:

  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Provide documentation of a sports physical or equivalent
  • Interview with SFMD staff
  • Possess a valid Arizona driver’s license
  • Obtain an Emergency Medical Technician certification within one year of starting the cadet program

The deadline to apply for the Fire Cadet Program is Aug. 30.
