Wrong-way driver causes collision on Grand in Surprise

A wrong-way driver in Surprise caused a collision Sunday morning, shutting down Grand Avenue near RH Johnson Boulevard, according to a highway official.

The incident occurred at about 6:30 a.m. Feb. 12. According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, there was a report of a wrong-way driver in a dark-colored SUV  travelling southeast in the northwest-bound lanes of US 60 at Sunrise and RH Johnson boulevards.

At about 6:35 a.m. the wrong-way vehicle was involved in a head-on collision involving another vehicle between RH Jonson Boulevard and Reems Road along Grand Avenue.

A Surprise Fire-Medical Department battalion chief said two people were involved, one in each vehicle. One was an elderly man, the other an elderly woman. There is no information yet on which one was the wrong-way driver.

Officials transported both to Valley hospitals, one via ground to a West Valley trauma center and the other via helicopter to St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix. Extrication was required for at least one person as the vehicles sustained heavy damage, the battalion chief said.

All lanes at the intersection were blocked while DPS Troopers and fire officials checked the people involved. Tow trucks arrived at the scene to remove the vehicles.

Impairment is not a factor at this time.
