The city of Surprise announced plans for the eighth annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Celebration and Service, which will be held on Saturday, Jan. 13 at the Vista Center for the Arts.

The Surprise Human Service and Community Vitality Department and the MLK Advisory Committee are bringing the community together at their eighth annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Celebration and Service on Saturday, Jan. 13 at The Vista Center for the Arts, 15660 N. Parkview Place.
The morning will include a hands-on service project that will help benefit the local community. Afterward everyone of all ages is invited to gather for a program of celebration.
Attendees can enjoy performances from local musicians, choirs and faith-based organizations; art and essay contest winner recognition; and a panel discussion with local leaders about the event theme “Unity, Service and Collaboration.”
The following is the schedule for the day:
• 8 a.m. — Volunteer check-in for service projects
• 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. — Day of service projects for all ages, featuring packing food for a local food bank, prepping hygiene kits and more. Pre-registration is required for all service projects. A complimentary meal will be provided to the first 500 attendees following service projects. Food trucks will also have items available for purchase.
• 11 a.m. to noon — MLK program
The event will be emceed by Susan Casper, “Sonoran Living” host on ABC15, a founding member of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women Phoenix Metropolitan Chapter and member of the National Association of Black Journalists.
For individuals and families to volunteer, arrive at 8 a.m. to receive an assignment. Advanced registration is required. Contact Larry Garcia at larry.garcia@surpriseaz.gov, or 623-222-1522.
Those planning on bringing a group/club/congregation that would like to participate in the service projects, RSVP the group name and estimated number of people to Garcia.
