An 18-year-old man has been arrested as the suspect in a deadly road rage shooting that occurred about 1:30 p.m. July 27 in Surprise, police said Sunday.
The shooter has been identified as Jaidev Christian Spicely, police said.
Spicely fled after the shooting near 163rd and Grand avenues, and officers used cameras in the area to identify him as the suspect in the killing of James Nicholas Solano-Aguilar, 33, according to a release from the Surprise Police Department.
Officers traveled to his home to take him into custody and as they were on their way Spicely called the department requesting to turn himself in. He was taken into custody without incident, police said.
Early Saturday afternoon, Surprise officers responded to 911 calls about a shooting near the intersection of 163rd and Grand avenues where they saw community members performing first aid on a man in the street, the release stated.
The victim was shot several times in his upper body, and was taken to a hospital where he later died.
Spicely was booked into the Maricopa County Intake and Release Jail on charges of second-degree murder, disorderly conduct with a weapon and discharge of a firearm within city limits.
“The Surprise Police Department extends our condolences to the Solano-Aguilar family. Solano-Aguilar was an active military member, and we are coordinating resources for his family in partnership with his branch of service,” the release stated.
The department advises anyone who encounters aggressive behavior on the road to remain calm and do not engage or retaliate. Instead, focus on driving and try to safely distance yourself from the aggressive driver.
