Sun City’s lawn bowls clubs: the greens revolution and mastering the art of the sport

Today we have an exciting journey ahead as we delve into the heart of our community, shining a light on the remarkable heroes of the local Recreation Centers of Sun City lawn bowls clubs. These clubs are more than just a place to toss a few balls around; they are vibrant threads that weave our community together, fostering friendship, fair play and a deep appreciation for the great outdoors.

Lawn bowls, a sport with roots dating back to the 13th century, is an enchanting game that combines precision and strategy. The objective is simple: roll balls with a bias (no, not that kind of bias) to get as close as possible to a smaller ball known as the “jack.” What makes this sport truly special is that it is accessible to everyone, making it a favorite among community clubs and appealing to all age groups.

Our local lawn bowls clubs, spread across Oakmont, Fairway/Mountain View, Lakeview and Bell Recreation centers in Sun City, are a testament to the enduring charm of this sport. The origin of these clubs can be traced back to the Oakmont Recreation Center, established by renowned land developer Del Webb. Such was his influence that even Walt Disney, a close friend of Webb’s, suggested the establishment of our first lawn bowls club. These clubs have become an integral part of our community fabric.

Lawn Bowls of Oakmont Center offers a haven where you can stay active, soak up the sun and join in the fun of lawn bowls. All you need are flat-soled shoes, a hat and sunglasses. The dress code is casual and comfortable.

Lawn Bowls of Fairway/Mountain View is a club where having fun is the priority for all members. Free lessons and equipment are available to RCSC cardholders as you learn, and you can purchase new or used equipment when you join the club.

Lawn Bowls of Lakeview Center is nestled in a serene environment, overlooking the beautiful lake. An open house is Nov. 11 and 12, where cardholders and their accompanied guests can experience the joys of lawn bowling firsthand. A mixed-fives tournament is Nov. 20, with more exciting events and tournaments to follow. With two lighted greens, we even accommodate evening bowling, and happily provide bowls for beginners and new members to learn the art of lawn bowling. Classes are offered at no charge.

The Bell Lawn Bowls Club has two greens with eight rinks each, and it provides bowls and other equipment for its members. The club also has a clubhouse with a kitchen, restrooms and a patio. The club welcomes new and experienced bowlers of all ages and abilities and offers coaching, tournaments, social events and inter-club competitions. The club is affiliated with the Southwest Lawn Bowls Association and the Bowls USA. The club’s bowling hours change seasonally, and the current tags-in times can be found on the club’s website. The club’s contact person is Amy Heidebrink, who can be reached at 623-583-4432 or cblbc@gmail.com. The club also has a program called Bowls Mart, which is run by Bill Pearson. Bowls Mart is a non-profit service that helps new bowlers buy, sell or trade used bowls at affordable prices. Bill Pearson can be contacted at 623-876-1896 or bpearson6@cox.net.

For those new to the sport, all the clubs offer coaching sessions led by experienced players, and all the necessary equipment is provided.

The clubs organize bowling sessions at various times throughout the day during the winter season, with limited availability during the summer. The tournaments attract players from neighboring communities, fostering a sense of unity and shared passion. In recent years, they have even had the honor of hosting regional and national tournaments.

These clubs are not just about the sport; they’re about building a community. They provide a platform for social interaction, helping members forge lifelong friendships. Moreover, the clubs actively contribute to the community by hosting charity events and fundraisers.
