State recognizes Gilbert Public Schools' adult learning program

Posted

The Gilbert Adult Learning Program from Gilbert Public Schools has been awarded "Excelling Program of the Year for Overall Adult Education Services" by the Arizona Department of Education for the second year in a row.

The Gilbert Adult Learning Program offers GED and Adult Basic Education/Adult Secondary Education classes to help prepare adults for GED exams and/or provide further enrichment.

The program offers two programs to serve the community including:

  • GED and Adult Basic/Secondary Education;
  • English Language Acquisition for Adults

The GED and Adult Basic Education/Adult Secondary Education classes help prepare students for the GED exam or to provide enrichment in the following areas:

  • Language Arts (Reading & Writing);
  • Math;
  • Science;
  • Social Studies;
  • College and Career Readiness.

Classes are designed to address the diverse educational needs of adult learners with small class instruction in all four test areas and access to computer software, textbooks, and worksheets to complement the student's study plan.

When a student enters the program, standardized assessments in reading, writing and math are administered and the student's lesson path is determined. Individual assignments are made based on the results of these assessments.

Students must attend registration prior to enrolling in a GED class. Classes are scheduled during the morning and evening to accommodate adult students' schedules.

English for Speakers of Other Languages classes provide instruction for people who desire to learn or improve their English language proficiency in order to enter the workforce or pursue post-secondary opportunities.

Students who do not speak English as their first language will learn reading, writing, speaking and listening skills as well as computer literacy.

College and career exploration, in addition to civics education, are topics also embedded in the curriculum.

Students must be at least 16 years old and have withdrawn from high school to enroll in the classes. Minors need to register with a parent or legal guardian, and all students must register before starting a class.

Students also must be able to declare they are lawfully in the United States in order to take the classes and be able to provide a valid photo ID. Regular attendance is necessary.
