Shapiro: Child safety ― what to do following an accident

Posted

Children deserve to live safe and happy lives. However, unexpected injuries do happen, leaving parents unsure of the next steps. Parents should not have to navigate these situations alone. The tips below are a great roadmap to help parents navigate accidents involving their children.

Automobile accidents

Experiencing a car accident with a child can be difficult but when armed with the proper tips, parents can leap into action. First, dial 9-1-1 for emergency services to ensure your child’s safety.

After injuries are addressed, the responding officer will take statements from those involved. Once you have received help from emergency services, document as much as you can. Take pictures of the crash scene and request a copy of the completed report for your records. Detailed documentation is crucial for legal and insurance purposes.

A properly installed car seat plays a critical role in protecting a child during an auto accident by absorbing and distributing the force of the impact. Following an accident, even if a car seat appears undamaged, it will no longer meet safety requirements.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safter Administration car seats must be replaced following an accident. Local car seat safety organizations can also help you determine a car seat’s viability after a crash.

Daycare accidents

Putting your trust in someone to care for your child is scary but asking just a few questions can help your family make the safe and right decision on which daycare to choose.

For example, common daycare injuries come from a disproportionate child-to-staff ratio, lack of disciplinary action or safety code violations. Asking prospective daycares how they handle discipline, and other similar questions can help you decide if this facility is the right fit for your loved one.

It is also recommended to tour every daycare you are interested in as a visual inspection of the building will reveal the condition, cleanliness and overall professionalism of the facility.

Daycares have strict rules and regulations to ensure your child’s safety, but these laws do not protect children from 100% of injuries.

If your child is injured, seek medical attention and immediately report their injuries to the daycare and police department if necessary. You will want to gather documentation of the incident, including security camera footage, photos of the incident scene and injuries, and statements from everyone present at the time of the incident.

While we hope your child is safe and injury-free, being prepared with knowledge of what to do after an accident can help. If you are unsure of what to do after an accident, consult an attorney so they can help you decide your next steps and whether you are entitled to compensation.
