Orchestra members join SC church for Christmas cantata

"Hark the Herald Angel’s Sing" and "Oh Come, All Ye Faithful" are inspiring Christmas carols that take on a dynamic dimension when performed by members of the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra.

And it is all happening at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 10, at the United Church of Sun City located at 11250 N. 107th Ave.

This year’s cantata is titled "The Christmas Story," subtitled "A Classic Carol Celebration." But this is not the traditional Charles Dicken’s "Christmas Carol," but a spiritual uplifting of music and message that serves as a backdrop for the Christmas story. Minister of Music Ginni Summers said, "I fell in love with this cantata when I first heard it and I love it more each rehearsal."

Summers will conduct both the 35-member choir along with the symphony. This year’s narrator is David Dunbar. The narration tells the biblically inspired story about the birth of Jesus Christ.

Composer Tom Fettke, along with music collaborator Thomas Grassi, said they selected a blend of "13 familiar and lesser known carols, which are the perfect match for Ken Bible’s refreshing narrative," the foreword to the music said.

In addition to the traditional carols there are two lively Spanish carols and a gentle Czechoslovakian carol along with an emotive German carol.

"Thomas Grassi is a rising star in church music and a highly-valued collaborator and the celebrated author Ken Bible provides a compelling and insightful narrative that is both timely and timeless," the foreword added.

"We are so fortunate to have Ginni Summers as our music minister, blessed to have our joyous choir, and the involvement of the Phoenix Symphony bringing this musical masterpiece to light," the Rev. Brady Abel, Sr. Pastor of United Church said.

That’s why folks will want to attend, he added. "Even with all the cantatas and other seasonal musical events taking place, the United Church of Sun City Christmas Cantata is always a magical experience. Ginni Summers, our accompanist Beverly Fletcher, the choir and the symphony together create a musical masterpiece."

Summers agreed. She said the Phoenix symphony makes the performance spiritually inspiring.

"The connection between these remarkable musicians and the extraordinary voices of the choir, allows the music to come alive," she said.

Everyone is welcome to attend.

"Many come just for this event and that’s fine. If we can help folks get into the spirit of the season, the real spirit of the season, then we consider our cantata an overwhelming success." Pastor Able said.
