George, 82, of Peoria, Arizona passed away on August 15, 2024, in Sun City, Arizona. Born on November 25, 1941, in Philadelphia, PA. George grew up in Glendale, Arizona and graduated from Glendale High School in 1959. George went to mortuary school at Cypress College in Cypress, California and graduated in 1964. He later went to work at Lundberg Mortuary in Youngtown, AZ in 1969.
George founded Menke Funeral Home in October 1977. He found an old Post Office in Sun City, remodeled it with a lot of grit and not much money, with hard work it became the most respected funeral home in the Sun City area. George was active in the Catholic Church even taking many priests on trips to Lake Powell, and many community organizations. He was a true innovator in the funeral business. There will never be another George Menke. He knew everyone in his community where he did most of his business. This contributed to his success at Menke Funeral Home. George treated his employees like family.
George is preceded in death by son George Scott Menke. Survived by his children Kimberly, Jennifer, Jordan and Brittany and also 5 grandchildren Tatum, Chase, Gabriel, Jack and Rhyatt.
George was a member of the State Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers, Charter member of Lakeview Rotary, American Legion, Glendale Sunrise Lions Club and the Fraternal Order of Police. George was appointed to the Critical Incident Review Board by the Department of Public Safety where he served for 7 years.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 20th from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm at Menke Funeral & Cremation Center, 12420 N. 103rd Avenue, Sun City, AZ.
Funeral Mass will be on Wednesday, August 21st, 10:00 am at St. Clement of Rome Catholic Church, 15800 N. Del Webb Blvd, Sun City, AZ.
