Flemming: Be safe on the roads out there

Posted

I am a little old lady (the original, lol). Started driving at 15 in Los Angeles County.

Moved here in 2010, visited my daughter in Cave Creek, via the 101. Quit the 101 due to insane drivers and undereducated road designers. Started using Bell and Union Hills maybe because I am old or have handicap tags or only go a nickel (that’s old speak for “5”) over the speed limit, or actually slow down in posted school zones. But, as a consequence, I have been shown various male appendages, a myriad of hand and arm gestures, and two very large hand guns.

I no longer use Bell and Union Hills east of 59th Avenue. Yes, I do fear for my life. Grand Avenue is a no-go as well.

Now I use Happy Valley. And over the last four years, it has become a pretty dangerous road. And I am starting to see the “window gestures,” horn honking and totally irresponsible driving.

One could definitely appreciate the vexation due to very bad planning for roads, businesses and housing, but not for the anger and unlawful behavior.

I realize we have limited police officials, and bless them, I do not want their job! And I am sure many factors play into this, but money probably leads the list. So, what does a moving violation bring in these days? How many warrants are out there for non-payment?

One of the roads I use to access my home is posted 35 mph. It has radar screens in both directions letting you know your speed. Many months ago, they put up a 25 mph sign. Not one single person I have spoken with has noticed that sign and no one obeys it but me, well, that I have seen. And many angry drivers have sped around me on that double yellow.

Sigh, last Tuesday, one idiot nearly hit an oncoming head on, passing me while I was making a right-hand turn. This needs to stop.

Other than letting me steam off a bit, I have a serious offer. I will let the powers that be install blue lights hidden in my grill and I offer a comfortable seat for a police officer to be beside me as I drive my neighborhood roads. I believe we can make enough stops to fund more officers. Well, I can almost guarantee it!

Be careful out there, people be crazy!! Thanks for “listening!"

(Yes, I do have a forward facing camera in my car.)
