Apache Junction school district introduces 3-year calendars

Posted

To enhance teacher preparedness and foster an optimal learning environment, Apache Junction Unified School District announces the release of its new three-year calendars. The calendars are designed to include additional preparation days for educators at the beginning of each academic year.

Recognizing the crucial role teachers play in shaping students’ educational journeys, AJUSD has undertaken this initiative to provide educators with dedicated time to ease back into the school year with time for planning, collaboration, and professional development, according to a release.

“We believe that investing in our teachers’ professional development is ultimately an investment in the success of our students. These calendars reflect our commitment to providing the best possible learning environment by prioritizing the preparation and well-being of our dedicated educators,” Superintendent Dr. Robert Pappalardo said in the release.

The first day of school is July 17, 2024; July 16, 2025; and July 15, 2026.

Key features of the three-year calendars, according to AJUSD, include:

1. Extended preparation days: At the commencement of each academic year, teachers will benefit from additional preparation days to fine-tune lesson plans, engage in collaborative discussions and attend professional development sessions. This strategic approach aims to empower educators with the tools and knowledge necessary for a successful school year.

2. Long-term planning: The introduction of three-year calendars enables teachers, students and parents to plan, creating stability. This long-term perspective contributes to a more organized and effective educational experience for everyone involved.

3. Revised early-release schedule allows for more instructional time: Currently, every Wednesday is an early-release day, so students lose about 90 minutes of instruction each week (360 minutes). The new calendar includes fewer early release days each month thus increasing instructional time in the classroom.

The release of the three-year calendar aligns with AJUSD’s “kids first” mission to empower students through excellence in education, fostering a community of lifelong learners, the release states..
