Seiden: Elect those who understand the real needs of our students

Posted

There is a critical election coming up for the SUSD School Board. However, the election is also about the very nature of our children’s education and is important to understand that their education involves a system, multiple parts working together.

The education of our children is not just about teaching subjects and testing. It is about building the whole person. Yes, it is about learning math, science, technology and other subjects, but it’s also about developing critical thinking skills and incorporating the arts and social skills into the overall learning experience. It is about developing the total individual, learning to grow and expand one’s knowledge basis, not only in subject matter but as a responsible individual. We believe that SUSD does that quite well.

Teachers are not the only component of the educational system. Parents are essential to the student’s learning. They have a responsibility to ensure that homework is done and studying skills are developed. They are essential elements of support for the teachers.

We must remember that our students went through a traumatic period in 2020 with the COVID pandemic. They became isolated when their education was restricted to online learning, which was implemented on the fly and, to a degree, separated them from their learning community. Also, we must not forget the second language learners who are trying to adapt to learning in an unfamiliar language and, while just as intelligent as our native speakers, may not perform as well in standardized testing.

All of these factors lead to the need to elect people who have experience in education and who  understand the real needs of our children and grandchildren. That’s why we support Dr. Menzel and must elect Donna Lewis, Matt Pittinsky and Mike Sharkey to the SUSD school board.
