DeFusco: Experience for the good of society

Posted

While there are no specific prerequisites for school board candidates, it’s reassuring to know that Sharkey, Lewis and Pittinsky bring a wealth of professional and relevant experience to the table.

With decades of experience in the education technology and entrepreneurship arenas, Pittinsky and Sharkey are well-versed in the innovative solutions our schools need. Lewis, on the other hand, brings a unique perspective as an experienced teacher, administrator and superintendent. While I don’t doubt the commitment of the other candidates to SUSD, the Sharkey, Lewis and Pittinsky ticket assures us the level of expertise and experience our students deserve.

Sharkey, Lewis and Pittinsky firmly believe that public education is a societal good. Public education’s role in social order is a necessary yet less discussed topic. An educated population benefits all of us – even those without children. This slate knows that a well-functioning community provides education to its citizens. This means solving problems, especially those stemming from a state that underfunds education.

Unfortunately, the crux of the opposition’s ticket – “parents’ rights” – will focus on sensational topics or give credence to the person who screams the loudest rather than focusing on real problems faced daily in our schools.

Sharkey, Lewis and Pittinsky will work with parents, students, teachers and administrators to solve problems to make SUSD the best choice for educating our kids.
