Queen Creek residents can learn from fire department

Residents ages 18 and older can take part in a new volunteer opportunity from Queen Creek Fire & Medical Department.

Volunteers will be trained and scheduled to respond and assist with residents' smoke detector-related services.

Initiated by a request for assistance with smoke detectors from residents, the volunteers will be trained and scheduled to respond to help with this service.

"Volunteers will be partnered with another volunteer and work in pairs to respond to scheduled service appointments. Smoke detectors are used in this description, but it includes heat detectors and CO detectors," the town's website stated.

Supporting the logistics of providing this service assists the department in preventative public safety measures and community education.

The service  will vary depending on the request and the situation volunteers find in a resident’s home.

"Services may include educating the homeowners on how to test and maintain their smoke detectors in best working condition; maintaining or servicing smoke detectors: changing the batteries and cleaning the detectors; and changing expired or malfunctioning smoke detectors with new ones," according to the website.

A volunteer is expected to be available two days a month to make scheduling appointments and matching volunteers into partner teams easier.

The service will be provided to single family residences in Queen Creek, including homes within the Queen Creek Fire District.  Requests from commercial buildings and rental apartments will be referred to a company that performs these services.

"Each volunteer will receive training on each type of detector and any unique features of the more common manufacturers.  Additional training will also be provided on the safe use of the tools and equipment provided to complete the assignments," the website added.

Volunteers must be able to pass an extensive background screening and a polygraph, as well as commit to a regular, weekly shift. Ability to drive, holding a valid driver's license and have a clear record are a must.

QFMD is looking to recruit 12 volunteers for a total for six paired teams.

The paired volunteers will be provided with a department vehicle and all the necessary equipment and supplies required to complete the service requests during their shift. Volunteer will also be issued a department shirt and hat to be worn while on duty and providing services.  Volunteers are expected to wear navy or black pants or shorts and closed toed shoes during their shift.

"Volunteers will be representing the Queen Creek Fire and Medical department. It is expected that each volunteer will uphold and advance the reputation the department has worked hard to earn. In many cases the volunteers will be the first and maybe the only interaction between the customer requesting service and the department. The expectation is that volunteers will provide a positive experience in a professional manner with each interaction," the website stated.
