The high school girls volleyball season began Aug. 16 at schools across the state. West Valley Preps and the Glendale Independent asked local high school coaches about their teams. Here are their responses:

Mountain Ridge Mountain Lions

Coach: Whitney Warmus (second season)
2023 Record: 8-5 overall, 5-0 region (6A runner up)
Region: 6A Desert Valley
Who are your top returning players?: All four seniors (Isabella Ceja, Lilian Motz, Hannah Hoffart and Talia Nelson) juniors Cameron Mailioux, Kaliyahna Baldwin, Peyton Yankovich, Sophia Villalovos and Tanvi Kolapkar, sophomores Emma Langer and Tamryn Boucos are my top returners
Who are some of the newcomers that may have an impact this year? Sophomores Tahlia Hempen, Emily Scott and Avery Luke and junior Kailee Murphy.
What is your team’s best attribute entering this season? Looking to build off of last season, a lot of returning players on defense. Looking to build in new addtions and mesh faster this year.
Which teams on this season’s schedule are you most looking forward to and will be the toughest? Xavier, Millenium and a few region games.

What are the primary goals for this year’s team? Back to be region champs and entering playoffs and attempting another run. Growing our program is key focus.

O'Connor Eagles

Coach: Robert Latona (second season)
2023 Record: 4-8 overall, 3-1 region
Region: 6A Desert Valley
Who are your top returning players: Junior Becky Currence, senior Victoria Whipple and junior Bella Wolf.
Who are some of the newcomers that may have an impact this year? Junior Ava Hannosh and sophomore Kylie Pruitt.
What is your team’s best attribute entering this season? They are hungry to learn the game of football and are ready to put in the work. We have been doing this since May and the girls have already began to understand the game.
Which teams on this season’s schedule are you most looking forward to and will be the toughest? Xavier, because its the first test of the season. Mountain Ridge, because they are the rival down the street.
What are the primary goals for this year’s team? Learn to be teammates, learn the game of football, win the region and win the state title.
