Teens indicted as suspects in ‘ambush’ shooting of Phoenix officer

Two teens have been indicted in what the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office called an “ambush” shooting of a Phoenix police officer.

Mathew Rodriguez, 17, has been charged as an adult along with Jamiah Mower, 19, according to the MCAO.

On the night of March 29 near 35th and Southern avenues, officer Harold Boswell tried to help the two women “only to be confronted by gunfire coming from Rodriguez and Mower,” the release stated.

Rodriguez was arrested a day after the shooting, and Mower was arrested in Las Vegas days after the shooting and was recently extradited to Maricopa County. An unidentified juvenile is being prosecuted in juvenile court, officials said.

Mower and Rodriguez have been indicted on the following charges:

  • One count of attempt to commit armed robbery.
  • Two counts of aggravated assault.
  • One count of aggravated assault.
  • One count of kidnapping.
  • One count of unlawful discharge of a firearm.

The charges involved dangerous felonies, meaning if convicted the defendants would face a mandatory prison sentence, according to MCAO.

Mower is being held on a $250,000 cash only bond. Rodriguez is being held on a $150,000 secured appearance bond.

“Officer Boswell is a hero who was trying to help two victims being threatened at gunpoint,” Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said.

“These defendants are a young adult and a juvenile facing very serious felonies, but the danger to Officer Boswell and the victims cannot be understated.”
