State invests $2.4M statewide in nonprofit arts & culture sector

The Arizona Commission on the Arts announced 369 grants to statewide arts organizations and programs, including more than $132,000 in grants to West Valley organizations and programs.

A one-time investment of $2 million in support of Arizona’s arts & culture sector will reach communities throughout the state to benefit nonprofit organizations, festivals, and arts learning programs.

Grants were awarded to a diverse array of organizations and programs, from museums to rural arts centers, and spread across the state from Flagstaff’s annual Hopi Art and Culture Festival to Border Fashion Week in Nogales.

“The arts are an essential expression of Arizona’s vibrant communities and diverse cultures,” Christina You-sun Park, Arizona Commission on the Arts executive director, shared in a press release. “Through the Arts Commission the State invests in a thriving statewide nonprofit arts sector that drives local economies, contributes to the vibrance and livability of our communities, enhances the education of our young people, and promotes the health and well-being of our residents.”

Grants were awarded in four categories:

Creative Capacity Grants provide general operating support to arts and culture organizations of all sizes whose primary mission is to produce, present, teach, or serve the arts. This year, 276 organizations were awarded Creative Capacity Grants in amounts ranging from $880 to $22,200. Award amounts are based on the organization’s size and their application’s performance in the competitive review process.

Festival Grants support organizations in their efforts to provide quality arts and cultural programming through community festival activities. Grant awards range from $2,500 to $5,000. 62 arts festivals received grants in this round of funding.

Lifelong Arts Engagement Grants support projects that foster meaningful arts learning experiences in community settings for adult learners of any age while Youth Arts Engagement Grants support programs focused on young people ages 24 and under that occur outside of traditional school hours.

Between the two programs, 31 arts engagement programs received grants of up to $5,000.

Positioned as a one-time appropriation from the State’s General Fund, the $2 million is appropriated to the Arts Commission for Fiscal Year 2025. Due to the state’s current budget challenges this year’s legislative appropriation was only 40% of last year’s $5 million one-time appropriation.

Analysis of data collected by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics found that cultural industries added $14.2 billion in value to the state’s economy in 2022 – more than forestry and mining combined – and employed nearly 92,000 Arizonans who earned a total of $7.1 billion.

Arizona’s nonprofit arts sector alone employs more than 11,000 creative workers and generates over $1.1 billion annually in economic activity throughout the state. Arizonans employed by nonprofit arts organizations earned nearly $500 million and contributed over $15 million to state tax revenues in 2023.
