Peoria recognizes the month of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
This annual observance serves as a reminder to the community of the devastating impact domestic violence has on individuals, families, and society as a whole. Also during this month, the city honors the courage of survivors and the dedication of those working to assist them.
According to national statistics, an estimated 10 million cases of domestic violence occur each year in the United States, resulting in an average of more than three deaths per day. These numbers highlight the urgent need for awareness and action to prevent and address domestic violence.
Throughout October, Peoria has a number of ways to shine a light on this important issue.
Mayor Jason Beck officially proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month at the Oct. 1 city council meeting.
Despite ongoing roof repairs at City Hall, Peoria is displaying purple lights in support of Domestic Violence Awareness Week from Oct. 14 to Oct. 20. Peoria also encourages community members to participate in Purple Thursday on Oct. 17 by wearing purple. This simple act serves as a powerful symbol of solidarity with survivors and sends a message that they are not alone.
Peoria also recognizes the Peoria Police Department Victim Assistance Unit and the City’s Prosecutor’s Office Victim Assistance Unit as two of many organizations working tirelessly to support victims and put an end to domestic violence.
