Officials from the city of Mesa and Mesa Public Schools are partnering to bring awareness to back to school and pedestrian safety by stepping into the shoes of crossing guards during the morning August 14.

This partnership aims to encourage safer road behavior from pedestrians and drivers with school back in session, as well as to raise awareness for the role of crossing guards in getting students to school safely every day, according to a press release.

“We are thrilled to have such enthusiastic participation from our local public figures,” said RJ Zeder, city of Mesa’s director of transportation. “Their involvement helps amplify the importance of street safety for all road users of all ages, and we are confident it will make a lasting impression on the community.”

Participating public figures include Arizona Diamondbacks mascot Baxter the Bobcat, Mesa Mayor John Giles, Mesa Councilmembers Mark Freeman, Julie Spilsbury, Jean Duff and Alicia Goforth, Mesa Assistant Fire Chief Forest Smith, Dobson High School mascots Spunky and Spirit Mustang, Mountain View High School mascot Tommy Toro and city of Mesa sustainability character Wayne Drop.

“These public figures will don the iconic crossing guard vests and assist with ensuring safe street crossings, all while engaging with the community and spreading smiles,” the press release stated. “We hope this initiative inspires everyone to be more mindful on the roads, not only now that school is back in session but throughout the school year.”
