Conchas: Public safety success requires layered approach

Posted

As a candidate for Glendale City Council, I want to share my vision for public safety directly with you. Glendale is my home, and I am deeply committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents, including my own family. This commitment is not just about words; it’s about taking action to create a safer, more secure environment for all of us.

The backbone of our public safety infrastructure is our dedicated police and fire departments. Even with the addition of 13 new patrol officers in the most recent budget, the police department remains understaffed. Investing in our firefighters, police officers and other public safety staff is crucial to meet the evolving needs of the community.

Enhancing police department forensics laboratories will significantly improve our crime-solving capabilities, leading to quicker resolutions. Additionally, acquiring new and replacement fire and police protection equipment, such as fire trucks and police cars, is essential to ensure the safety of our responders and residents.

To build trust and collaboration between law enforcement and residents, we must promote strategies that encourage open communication. Establishing neighborhood watch programs and community forums will help address specific safety concerns and foster a sense of community. Engaging residents to create policy solutions tailored to local issues is key to maintaining public trust and engagement from residents in the community.

Public safety is complex and requires attention to mental health and opioid addiction. Expanding mental health crisis intervention training for emergency responders is vital. By establishing partnerships with mental health organizations, we can provide outreach and support to individuals in crisis, addressing the underlying issues that contribute to public safety concerns.

Advocating for increased funding for community-based mental health services is critical. These services can address root causes of safety issues, providing the support individuals need. We must advocate for increased access to addiction treatment services, addressing the root causes of substance-related safety issues.

Developing community-wide emergency preparedness campaigns will educate residents on response protocols, ensuring everyone knows what to do in a crisis. Collaborating with local organizations and businesses to establish emergency evacuation plans and shelter locations will enhance our readiness. Investing in technology and training to improve the efficiency of emergency response systems is critical to ensure a swift and coordinated reaction to any crisis.

Investing in after-school programs and extracurricular activities is a proactive approach to keeping young people engaged and away from potential risks. Supporting initiatives that empower youth is essential to creating a resilient and thriving Glendale.
